Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

We are a nation that seems to love conflict and to feed that insatiable appetite the pundits hone in at every chance. There was much ado this week about football’s postgame incident last Saturday. While most of the free world has other things to worry about, there are super fans of both programs that have an assortment of theories about what happened, who was to blame and was the punishment too lax or too harsh. From this chair, the Southeastern Conference performs its many duties in a fair and first-class manner. There is a reason this conference is regarded as the nation’s best.
Here’s a reminder to all you baseball fans planning to take in one or both of the games this weekend with Cal-Fullerton. Game time both Saturday and Sunday is 11:00 a.m., all seats are general admission and ticket prices are $7 for the bowl and $5 for the outfield.
Remember when Quick Slant mentioned our women’s cross country team was pretty good? This week’s national ranking has our runners leaping into third, the highest rated Southeastern Conference squad.
Speaking of high national rankings, did you notice that Baseball America ranked our baseball recruiting class as No. 1 in the country and USA Today has our men’s basketball team checking in at No. 7? Add top 10 rankings for women’s golf and bowling, the top-rated freshman class in men’s tennis along with solid rankings in other programs and you can see why we believe it is good to be gold.
