Quick Slant: Mission Statement feedback

Sept. 30, 2010

Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

  • A few months ago, Commodore fans were electronically asked to offer a word they felt summarized what Vanderbilt Athletics stands for and a word for what Vanderbilt Athletics should represent. Hundreds of you responded and here are the three most popular words in each category:
  • What Vanderbilt Athletics stands for: 1. Integrity 2. Student-athlete 3. Academics

What VU Athletics should stand for: 1. Winning/winners 2. Integrity 3. Champions

This input has been useful as a

new department Mission Statement is being crafted.

  • The Nashville Predators recently signed a long-term deal to have their games broadcast on Nashville’s 102.9 FM, The Buzz, leaving 104.5 The Zone. Their reasoning: they wanted all their games on one radio location without conflicts and pre-empts. Sound familiar?
  • Extreme Home Makeover, ABC’s popular Sunday evening program, was recently in town to help rebuild after May’s devastating flood. Among the hundreds of volunteers toiling around the clock to get Lighthouse Christian School rebuilt and ready for use in one week were three Vanderbilt bowlers. All-American Brittni Hamilton and teammates Amanda Halter and Kim Carper worked a red-eye, 11 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. shift. This episode is tentatively scheduled to air in November according to ABC officials.
  • CBS is smiling. SEC football ratings are up 27% so far with the recent Alabama-Arkansas game up an astounding 117% over last year’s rating. That was the highest rated regular-season college game on CBS since 2003.
