Quick Slant: Large crowd expected for baseball banquet

Jan. 29, 2015

Saturday’s baseball pre-season banquet will attract a crowd of nearly 800 to the downtown Omni Hotel. That is a far cry from Tim Corbin’s first couple years on campus when the event was a rather low key affair held in the basement of the University Club. A word of advice for those with tickets: there is an autograph session planned and the team members will only be able to sign the official handout at the banquet; for a variety of reasons they will not be able to sign personal artifacts that fans may bring.

Former basketball career scoring leader Matt Freije is currently doing commentary with play by play announcer George Plaster on Nashville’s High School Game of the Week. With as many networks needing talent, with this type of experience perhaps Matt can accomplish behind the microphone what he was able to do on the playing court if he so chooses.

The recent football coaching staff additions of offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig, receivers coach Cortez Hankton, cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght and football strength director James Dobson are impressive in anyone’s book. If you haven’t read their bios, take a few moments to do so as they have all been successful at top levels.

Another former Commodore is being inducted into a Hall of Fame. Bill Depp, who played basketball here from 1959-1961 will enter the Indiana Basketball Hall on March 25 in a big event in Indianapolis. Bill will join some of the sport’s greatest players and is looking forward to having his family, including his five grandchildren, in attendance. Congratulations to one of our good guys!

Members of our athletic administration each took a turn reading at Nashville’s Julia Green Elementary during the school’s annual Read-a-Thon the week of January 26.
