Quick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.
The Special Collections wing of Vanderbilt’s Central Library has unveiled an outstanding exhibit dedicated to legendary sports writers Grantland Rice and Fred Russell, both Vanderbilt alumni who donated their papers to the university. The exhibit includes an interactive video board that contains a 1949 event that honored Russell, photographs that likely have not been seen by the public, a letter of praise from Ogden Nash and various other artifacts that historians and sports buffs will enjoy. The exhibit is free and expected to remain for nearly a year, well worth the investment of time to see.
We have a lot of dedicated and talented people working every day to make Vanderbilt athletics special. One is Michele Loftis, who just received the inaugural Southeastern Conference Athletic Trainer of the Year Award. The sports medicine staffs of all 14 SEC schools voted on the award. We are proud of Michele!

I’ve been thinking about graduating golfer Kimmie Koehler’s grade point ever since I found out she earned a cumulative 3.96 majoring in Cognitive Studies and minoring in Corporate Strategy. On this campus…a 3.96…in the words of the late Harry Carey, “Holy Cow!” Graduation is May 9, the biggest day on campus.
