Positive start for 'Dore bowlers

NEW ORLEANS—Vanderbilt’s bowlers began their season on a good note, winning five of six matches and stand in third place after the first day of the All-State Sugar Bowl Classic.The Commodores’ day was highlighted by a 9-pin victory over No. 1 rated Nebraska and included other wins over Florida A&M, Texas Southern, Southern and Prairie View. They dropped a position round match to No. 2 ranked Arkansas State to close the afternoon. The teams were competing in 5-game Baker games.”It was a typical first day in many ways,” said Coach John Williamson, “but I was pleased with many things including our team chemistry. Our two freshmen saw a lot of action and they performed well. Overall it was a positive day.”The lineup most of the day was Tori Ferris and Nicole Powell sharing the leadoff spot, newcomers Jordan Newham and Kristin Quah in the two and three holes with veterans Giselle Poss and Robyn Renslow anchoring the lineup. Quah had a 212 Baker frame average to pace VU with Newham next at 206.Vanderbilt opens Saturday morning’s team games against Sam Houston State at 9 CDT.
