BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Forward Khamil Pierre made Vanderbilt women’s basketball history Tuesday, as she was named SEC Freshman of the Week for a school-record third time.
Pierre averaged 20.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game, while shooting 58.3 percent from the floor to help Vanderbilt go 1-1 on the week. The freshman scored a career-high 28 points in last Sunday’s win at Georgia and collected a double-double against No. 13/11-ranked LSU this past Thursday at Memorial Gymnasium.
The Queen Creek, Arizona, native becomes the first player in program history to earn three SEC Freshman of the Week honors. Pierre also won the award on Jan. 2 and Jan. 16.
The 6-2 forward ended the week by scoring a career-high 28 points to help Vanderbilt pick up its ninth win at Georgia in program history. Pierre shot a blistering-hot 75 percent from the field, as she went 12-of-16 from the floor against the Bulldogs. The 28 points scored by Pierre are the most by a Vanderbilt freshman this season, while it is the second-most points scored by a freshman in an SEC contest.
Pierre opened the week by collecting her third double-double of the season, as she scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds against No. 13/12-ranked LSU. Pierre hit a career-best nine free throws against the Tigers, as she went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe against the defending national champions.
Vanderbilt heads to Texas A&M this Thursday, as the Commodores and Aggies will tipoff at 8 p.m. on SEC Network. The Commodores host in-state rival Tennessee Sunday. Tipoff from Memorial Gymnasium is set for 1 p.m. on SEC Network.
