BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Tuesday, the SEC announced that Vanderbilt women’s basketball player Khamil Pierre has been named SEC Freshman of the Week. It is the second weekly conference award of her collegiate career.
The 6-2 forward averaged 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds in a pair of SEC contests last week. Pierre shot 60.9 percent from the field on the week and had double-digit points in back-to-back games for the first time in her Vanderbilt career. The highlight of Pierre’s week came in last Sunday’s contest against Missouri, where she recorded the first double-double of her career with a 16-point, 12-rebound effort.
The Queen Creek, Arizona, native opened the week by scoring a career-high 16 points in Vanderbilt’s 95-73 win at Kentucky. The 6-2 forward shot 72.7 percent from the field (8-of-11) at Rupp Arena, while she pulled down six rebounds and dished out two assists.
The freshman rounded out the week with her best performance in a Commodore uniform to date against Missouri. Pierre scored 16 points for the second time during the week and pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds to post her first career double-double. Pierre is the first Vanderbilt freshman to record a double-double since March 4, 2022, when Sacha Washington had 12 points and 10 rebounds against Texas A&M in the first round of the SEC Tournament.
It is the second time this season that Pierre has been named SEC Freshman of the Week. The first time came on Jan. 2, when she shared the honor with Mississippi State’s Quanirah Montague.
On the year, Pierre is averaging 7.1 points and 4.2 rebounds in 18 games for the Commodores. The freshman has stepped up her play in SEC action, as Pierre is putting up 9.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game through four league contests.
The Vanderbilt women’s basketball team returns to action Thursday, as the Commodores host Auburn for the annual We Back Pat game. Tipoff against the Tigers is set for 6:30 p.m. and will stream live on SEC Network+.
