BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Tuesday, the SEC announced that Vanderbilt women’s basketball player Khamil Pierre has been named Co-SEC Freshman of the Week. It is the first weekly conference award of her collegiate career.
The 6-2 forward averaged 10.5 points and 6.0 rebounds in a pair of Commodore wins last week, while she shot an even 50% (9-of-18) from the floor. Pierre shared this week’s SEC Freshman of the Week honors with Mississippi State’s Quanirah Montague.
The Queen Creek, Arizona, native opened the week by scoring 12 points and pulling down seven rebounds in 20 minutes of action off the bench in Friday’s 73-41 win over FDU. Pierre shot 55.6% (5-of-9) from the floor against the Knights. The 12-point outing marked her third double-digit scoring outing of the season. It was also her sixth game shooting over 50% from the field this season.
The freshman made her first collegiate start in Sunday’s 80-53 win over Radford. Pierre scored nine points and pulled down five rebounds in 24 minutes against the Highlanders. She also matched her career-high in assists with three against FDU.
Vanderbilt is off to its best start since the 2006-07 season, as the Commodores enter SEC play at 13-1. The 13 wins ties the 2006-07 team for the most wins heading into conference play in school history.
The Dores open the SEC portion of its schedule this Thursday at Mississippi State. Tipoff from Starkville, Mississippi, is set for 6:30 p.m. and will stream live on SEC Network+.
