5/22/2006 NASHVILLE, TN–Vanderbilt’s Michelle Peloquin today was named a first-team All-American bowler and was a run-away winner for the national “Rookie of the Year” award as voted by the National Tenpin Coaches Association. Classmate Tara Kane was one of five selected to the honorable mention squad. Peloquin, a native of Enfield, Ct., becomes Vanderbilt’s first bowling All-American and was the only freshman on the first team. She had an outstanding season with a 212 average over 64 games, second best in the entire NCAA. Peloquin had a high game of 265 and a school record 750 series against national runner-up Alabama A & M. She finished in the Top 10 in six of Vanderbilt’s nine tournaments, including second place performances at Minnesota State and Morgan State. A chemistry/biology (pre-medicine) major, she carries a 3.596 cumulative grade point average. “Michelle had a tremendous freshman year in every way,” says Coach John Williamson. “She was outstanding on the lanes, she excelled in the classroom and she evolved into a strong team leader. She has an extraordinary desire to excel in everything she does. Michelle has set a benchmark by which future outstanding Vanderbilt freshmen will always be compared.” Kane is from Greensburg, Pa., and became the school’s first tournament champion when she won the Arkansas State Invitational. She averaged 199 over 63 games and had four Top 8 finishes along with three games over 265. Kane is in the College of Arts and Sciences with a 3.37 cumulative grade point. “It became apparent to us early-on that Tara Kane was going to be special,” Williamson says. “To be voted among the best 15 bowlers in the NCAA is quite an accomplishment; we are pleased that her hard work was noticed and rewarded.” Nebraska’s Lindsay Baker, whose 215 average edged Peloquin as the best in the country, topped Lisa Friscioni in tight balloting for the NTCA “Player of the Year” Award. Mike LoPresti of national champion Fairleigh Dickinson was named “Coach of the Year” Vanderbilt concluded its second year of varsity bowling by placing in a tie for fifth place at the NCAA Championship.
