Nonconference Perfection

Vanderbilt rolls New Haven to finish 13-0 in non-SEC action

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — No. 11 Vanderbilt finished the nonconference slate in style with a 96-53 rout of New Haven on Monday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Commodores (13-0) were without the services of Duke Miles, who missed the game with an illness, but rolled past New Haven (5-8) thanks to a career-high 21 points from Jalen Washington and a game-high 23 from Tyler Tanner. Washington’s 21 came on seven dunks and two layups as the senior finished 9-of-11 from the field and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe. Tanner added seven assists, five boards and three steals to his stat-stuffing performance.

Devin McGlockton notched a double-double, the Commodores’ first of the season, with 15 points and 10 rebounds. McGlockton also matched his career high with five assists. Tyler Harris continued his resurgence with 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting while grabbing eight boards, three steals and three blocks.

Vandy seized control from the tip, opening the game on a 16-2 run in the first four minutes. The lead never shrank below double digits the rest of the way as the Dores built a 47-27 edge at the break.

The Commodores finished the day with a season-high nine blocks. Vandy forced 13 turnovers on 10 steals, turning the Charger miscues into 25 points.

With the win, Vanderbilt reaches 13-0 for just the second time in program history. It is just the sixth time the Commodores have finished nonconference action undefeated.

Vanderbilt turns its attention to SEC play when the Dores visit South Carolina on Saturday. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
