No. 2 LSU Too Much for No. 15 Commodores, 79-68 1/23/2005 NASHVILLE, Tenn. — LSU freshman center Sylvia Fowles scored 20 of her 22 points in the second half and the No. 2 Lady Tigers shot 62.5 percent in the second half as LSU held on to defeat No. 15 Vanderbilt, 79-68, Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gym. Dee Davis scored a career-high 24 points for Vandy and dished out eight assists. LSU had only two of the last 10 meetings in Memorial Gym and lost two games to the Commodores during the 2003-04 season. Seimone Augustus finished with 20 points and Wendlyn Jones added 13 points for LSU. Ashley Earley and Carla Thomas each finished with 14 points. Vanderbilt shot just 40 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting a season-low 39.7 percent. LSU shot 57.4 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers led 45-29 right out of the locker room after Jones hit a jumper with 15:58 remaining. Two free throws from Fowles extended the LSU lead to 47-31 with 14:25 left. Vanderbilt used a 10-4 run to cut its deficit to 49-39 with 12:42 remaining. Abi Ramsey hit a three-pointer and Thomas added a basket, but the Lady Tigers used an 8-2 run to push its lead back to 57-41 with 8:29 remaining. Earley completed a three-point play with 6:59 closing Vandy within 59-49, but Scholanda Hoston hit a three-pointer Jones completed a three-point play to push the LSU lead back to 65-49 with 6:24 left. LSU shot 53.3 percent in the first half and Augustus scored 16 first-half points as the Lady Tigers led, 36-27 at halftime. Vandy only shot 39.1 percent from the floor in the half and committed 10 turnovers. Earley had 10 of her points in the first half. LSU jumped out to a 13-4 lead with 13:45 left in the first half. Johnson scored four points and Hoston added a three-pointer. Vanderbilt got within 13-8 after Davis had back-to-back baskets, the last coming at the 12:17 mark. Vanderbilt got within 18-12 with 10:12 left in the half back-to-back lay-ups from Earley and Nicole Jules, but a quick 6-0 LSU run gave the Lady Tigers a 22-12 lead with 9:08 left. LSU extended their lead to 26-14 with 6:19 left in the half. Augustus scored on a fast-break lay-up to give the Lady Tigers the 12-point. Vanderbilt got within 28-21 with 3:27 after a lay-up from Earley. Temeka Johnson had nine points and seven assists for the Lady Tigers. Ramsey finished with nine points for Vanderbilt. Vanderbilt now heads to Lexington, Ky., Thursday night for a 6 p.m. tip with Kentucky. |
