How It Happened
First Quarter: Tulane 17, Vanderbilt 15
Vanderbilt (0-3) opened the game with a much better start than in their last two games and with five early points from Kaleigh Clemons-Green took a 7-6 lead early, but the home team used six unanswered to take a 10-7 lead at the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, Clemons-Green went to work and with a steal at mid-court went to the rack for two points to give her seven points. The Commodores found themselves down, 17-9 forcing White to call a timeout. The timeout was the right call as the Dores closed the quarter on a 6-0 run, cutting the Tulane (2-2) lead to just two points at the end of the quarter.
Second Quarter: Tulane 34, Vanderbilt 29
Vanderbilt kept the momentum of the quarter break, forcing a three-second call and with a bucket inside from Cierra Walker tied the game at 17 but Tulane answered and with a 6-1 spurt took a 23-18 lead at the 6:02 mark. A bucket from Autumn Newby stopped a nearly four minute scoreless stretch for the Commodores but the Green Wave held a 26-20 lead at the media timeout. Tulane took a 10-point lead, 34-24, with under a minute in the half but a three-point play from Bree Horrocks and a bucket from Chelsie Hall as time expired cut the lead down to two possessions, 34-29 at the break.
One of the more noticeable differences through the first half was on the glass. At the second quarter media timeout, Tulane held a 23-9 advantage with 18 offensive rebounds. The Commodores shot 50 percent in the second frame while holding the home team to just 41.4 percent. The Commodores also held a 7-0 advantage in fast break points.
Third Quarter: Tulane 49, Vanderbilt 44
Tulane came out of the halftime break and made adjustments and despite the Commodores getting the lead down to five points with less than a minute off the clock, the Green Wave took a double digit lead at the 7:16 mark. A trey from Rachel Bell – her first points of the game – coupled with a defensive stop on the other end cut the Tulane lead to 41-36 at the media timeout. Seniors Bell and Myka Dancy scored nine of Vanderbilt’s 16 points in the frame and got the Commodores within five points as time winded down.
Fourth Quarter: Tulane 71, Vanderbilt 59
The fourth quarter was a chess match as both teams matched each other bucket for bucket for the majority of the fourth quarter but Tulane started to pull away late in the quarter taking a 10-point lead, 63-53, with 2:08 left. Christa Reed, playing in front of friends and family, quietly had eight points in the second half and was joined in double figures by Kaleigh Clemons-Green who had a season -best 11 points. The visiting Commodores couldn’t get it any closer and the Green Wave sealed the win from the free throw line going 6-of-6 in the final 30 seconds for the win.
