New Zealand Native Katie Eggers to Join Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball Program 5-13-04 5/13/2004 Vanderbilt women’s basketball head coach Melanie Balcomb has announced the signing of Nelson, New Zealand, native Katie Eggers to a national letter of intent to attend Vanderbilt and play basketball during the 2004-05 season. “I really liked Katie’s versatility,” said Balcomb. “She’s a 6’1″ player who’s shows solid abilities to play both inside the paint and outside on the perimeter. We definitely can use her versatility. I think one of her strengths is her knowledge of the game. She’s an excellent student, so I believe she can be very successful here at Vanderbilt both athletically and academically.” Eggers, a 6’1″ guard/forward at the Nelson College for Girls, played on New Zealand’s under-21 national team in 2002 and was a member of the under-18 national squad from 2000-2002 that participated in the Australian State Championships as well as the Koru Tour Albany Cup. She served as team captain of the under-18 squad during her final season in ’02. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2002 New Zealand Women’s Division National Championship Tournament after leading her Nelson Heat squad to the divisional title. Eggers is a four-time all-tournament selection at the New Zealand Secondary Schoolgirls Championships while participating for the Nelson College for Girls Senior A team. She also served as Nelson’s team captain in 2002. A two-year member of the Junior Tall Ferns squad, Eggers will participate with her team in the Oceania Championships from June 19-26 and in qualifying for the Junior World Championships later this year. |
