CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Ava Merrill’s 1-under-par round on Friday aided the Vanderbilt women’s golf team in the opening round at the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The Commodores sit 11th overall with two rounds to play at Finley Golf Club.

“Well today didn’t have the outcome we wanted, but we definitely learned some things about this golf course,” said head coach Greg Allen. “I hope we can execute a little better tomorrow.”

Merrill nailed back-to-back birdies to begin the action in North Carolina, totaling four on the day and placing her tied for fourth individually.

“Ava looked really good today,” said Allen. “I’m excited to see how she handles the next two days.”

Tillie Claggett and Sara Im both carded a 3-over-par 73 on Friday. With 36 holes remaining, the pair are tied for 25th individually. Lynn Lim and Angelina Tolentino both finished with an 80.

“Tillie and Sara were very solid and probably played better than their scores show,” said Allen. “Lynn and Angelina had a character-building day today, and there’s no doubt they will be just fine.”

With four schools tied for seventh place and only nine strokes separating third and 11th place, the Commodores are poised to climb the leaderboard with 36 holes remaining.

“I was extremely proud of how we kept our composure because a couple had every opportunity to let their frustration get the best of them,” said Allen.

Vanderbilt will take the tee on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. CT, along with UNCW and Virginia Tech. Live scoring for the event can be found HERE.
