Shan Foster

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — Shan Foster scored 11 of his 19 points over the final 6:11, and Vanderbilt took advantage of Dayton’s cold shooting in the closing minutes to win 63-60 Friday night.

Foster made a 3-pointer to put the Commodores (9-1) ahead for good 53-50 and hit another 3 for a 56-52 lead with 4:28 remaining. He also made 5-of-6 free throws in the final 14 seconds, countering two big baskets by Dayton’s Brian Roberts.

Roberts, who led the Flyers (8-6) with 21 points, scored on a layup and 3-pointer in the last 7 seconds, bringing Dayton within two and then one point.

Roberts’ baskets followed a scoreless stretch of 2:52, during which Dayton missed six shots. Before the late five points by Roberts, Dayton hadn’t scored since Roberts hit a jumper with 2:59 to play to cut Vanderbilt’s lead to 56-55.

Dayton, which lost its third straight, missed 16 of 26 shots from the field in the second half.

Foster made 4-of-9 shots from 3-point range — he was 0-for-4 inside the arc — and hit 7-of-8 free throws. He also had five rebounds.

Vanderbilt’s Derrick Byars added 14 points, including a 3-pointer that tied the score 50-all and a jumper for a 58-55 lead. DeMarre Carroll had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Commodores.

James Cripe had 12 points off the bench for Dayton.
