NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Shan Foster scored 12 points and Vanderbilt won its third straight game with a 53-45 victory over IUPUI on Thursday night.
Julian Terrell had eight points and 12 rebounds for Vanderbilt (7-1).
Matt Burks led IUPUI (5-6) with 15 points and Brandon Cole added 10. Guard George Hill, who entered the game averaging 18 points, scored just six on 3 for 12 shooting.
Vanderbilt looked to have the game in control, leading 50-37 with under three minutes to play, but IUPUI scored eight straight points to pull within 50-45 with 57 seconds left. Foster then hit the biggest shot of the game, a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to push Vanderbilt’s lead back to eight with 22 seconds remaining.
Vanderbilt attempted a season-high 29 three-point attempts, making eight, against an IUPUI zone that defended the interior and allowed the Commodores to shoot from the outside. The strategy was effective, as Vanderbilt shot a season-low 38 percent from the field. At the other end, IUPUI was held to 37 percent shooting a season-low in points.
Vanderbilt outrebounded IUPUI 42-27.
IUPUI built an early 13-5 lead by holding Vanderbilt scoreless for over six minutes in the first half. The Jaguars’ 2-3 zone caused the Commodores to miss nine of their first 10 shots. The Commodores answered with a 10-0 run, then later closed the first half on a 7-0 run to emerge with a 29-22 lead. Dan Cage hit a runner in the lane as time expired in the first half.
