(AP) — Corey Smith made Indiana’s first NIT appearance in 20 years extremely brief.

Smith scored a career-high 25 points to lead Vanderbilt to a 67-60 victory over Indiana in an opening-round NIT contest.

The Commodores (19-13), who won the 1990 title, defeated the Hoosiers for the third time in nine meetings.

Smith, a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection, scored 14 points in the second half, including seven free throws in the final 1:24, to help Vanderbilt break a two-game losing streak.

Shan Foster scored 11 points for the Commodores, who never trailed and shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from the floor in the second half.

Bracey Wright scored 17 points, Robert Vaden added 13 and Marshall Strickland 10 for the Hoosiers (15-14), the 1979 NIT champs, who end their season with three losses in their last four games.
