Men’s Cross Country Places Fourth At Belmont Opener 9/2/2005 The Vanderbilt men’s cross country team opened the 2005 season with a fourth place finish at the Belmont Invitational Friday at Percy Warner Park. Sophomore Austin Williamson finished 10th in the 5k race with a mark of 15:19. “Austin had a sensational race,” VU Head Coach Don Bailey said. “He was right where I expected him to be.” The Commodores secured a place in the top five by staying in a pack that included eight runners in the top fifty. “We’ve got a good gauge on where we’re at,” Bailey said. “There’s a lot of room for improvement — we’ve got to work on getting the second pack further up in the race.” Seniors Kyle Morrison (15:57) and Mike Gaske (16:18) trailed Williamson to finish second and third on the Commodore squad, followed by sophomore Chris Noel (16:21) and freshman Matt Long (16:22). “It was a good start for us,” Williamson said. “It showed us we have a long way to go, but we have a means of getting there.” The next race for the Commodores will be in two weeks when they will host the Commodore Classic at Percy Warner Park on Saturday, Sept. 17. |
