Ashley McElhiney, who became the first Vanderbilt basketball player to record 600 career assists, will be honored as Vanderbilt’s SEC Women’s Legend for 2013.
McElhiney will be honored along side female athletes from the other 13 SEC institutions at the 2013 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Duluth, Ga., March 6-10. The ceremony will take place at halftime of Vanderbilt’s first game in the tournament.
A native of Gleason, Tenn., McElhiney left Vanderbilt as the school’s all-time assists leader at 673. She was the only player, men’s or women’s, at Vanderbilt to dish out at least 600 assists until Dee Davis passed her mark with 730 assists. McElhiney remains second all-time in career assists and holds two of the top six single-season totals in school history. Her record of 17 assists in a single game still stands.
McElheny’s average of 7.46 assists per game as a senior led the SEC and was second in the nation. During that year she was named one of the top-five point guards in the nation by ESPN.com and a finalist for the Nancy Liberman Point Guard of the Year award for the second consecutive season. She was also one of 10 national finalists for the Senior CLASS Award.
McElhiney saw action all four years as a Commodore, playing in 132 games and starting 109 contests. She holds the school record for 40-minute games, having played the entirety of 38 contests during her career.
She was Third Team All-SEC as a senior, a second team selection as a junior and earned a spot on the SEC All-Tournament team as a sophomore. McElhiney finished her career with 1,093 points, a total which ranks 27th in program history.
