NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Freshman Jeffery Taylor’s 16 points led five players in double figures, three of which were freshmen, as Vanderbilt defeated Morehead State 74-48 Sunday.
“I liked our team’s effort,” Kevin Stallings, VU head coach, said. “I thought we played really hard. To turn them over 21 times and hold them to 34 percent shooting, I’m pleased with that.
“I thought we didn’t take care of the ball in the first half. Our team’s mentality is to come out and try to win the game in the first five minutes, but it’s a 40 minute game. We need to slow down mentally.”
Taylor scored 10 in the second half as the Commodores outscored the Eagles 43-24.
Vanderbilt (1-0), which has seven freshmen on its roster, also got 12 points from sophomore A.J. Ogilvy and 10 from junior Jermaine Beal.
Morehead State (0-2), which led for most of the game’s first 11 minutes, got 10 points each from Robert Murry and Terrance Hill.
“They had a lot of size,” A.J. Ogilvy remarked. “They tried to play physical with us and they got into foul trouble. We adjusted early on and then played pretty well.”
The Commodores were without freshman forward Steve Tchiengang, who was declared ineligible for the first five games of the season by the NCAA under a policy that involves certain first-year international students. Tchiengang is a native of Cameroon.
