Any open seat may be used until that time.NASHVILLE – Vanderbilt returns to Memorial Gym after a 10-day break when the Commodores take on intracity opponent Tennessee State Saturday at 8 p.m. CSS will broadcast the game live throughout the region, and Joe Fisher and Tim Thompson will have the call on the Vanderbilt/ISP Radio Network.
VU enters Saturday’s contest with a 10-0 record and a number 17 ranking in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls. The Commodores needed overtime to come away with a 91-85 win over DePaul in Chicago on December 12 to stay unbeaten. Vanderbilt trailed by as many as 18 points with just under 15 minutes to go in regulation, and scored seven out of the last eight points in regulation to force the game to overtime and the eventual win.
Senior Shan Foster and freshman A.J. Ogilvy led the Vanderbilt effort with 19 points apiece, while senior Alan Metcalfe and freshman guard Keegan Bell came off of the Commodore bench with 18 and 12 points, respectively. As of December 20, Foster and Ogilvy are 1-2 in the SEC in scoring at 20.3 and 19.5 points per game, respectively.
The game with the Blue Demons marked the first time this season that Vanderbilt had trailed at the half, and only the second time in 2007-08 that an opponent has attempted more free throws than the Commodores. Vanderbilt made 12 threes against the DePaul, the most for a Commodore team this season, and limited the Blue Demons to only 22.7% from beyond the arc for the game.
Vanderbilt and Tennessee State will meet for the sixth time Saturday, with the Commodores holding a 5-0 advantage in the series. All games have been played on Vanderbilt’s campus at Memorial Gym. VU won the last meeting, 87-65, on November 21, 2004. Vanderbilt also owns a 50-7 record against the Ohio Valley Conference after defeating Austin Peay, 81-67, on November 10 earlier this season.
Tennessee State enters the game with a 3-6 record after dropping its last time out, 82-71, at Belmont on December 17. Bruce Price leads the Tigers in scoring, averaging 21.0 points per game. Gerald Robinson (16.9) and Jerrell Houston (10.2) also averages double figures for Tennessee State.
Tennessee State head coach Cy Alexander is in his fifth season with the Tigers and has compiled a 49-78 record. Overall, Alexander is 326-279 in 22 years as a head coach.
Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. from Memorial Gym.
