MBB begins stellar day for VU athletics

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s basketball team takes on St. Francis (Pa.) at 11 a.m. at Memorial Gym in a precursor to the football team’s first bowl game in 26 years later in the day at LP Field in Nashville. The game can be heard onthe Vanderbilt-ISP Radio Network and VUcommodores.com, with Andy Jones andTim Thompson on the call.

The Commodores bring in a four-game winning streak to the contest againstthe Red Flash on Wednesday morning in their first game back from the holidaybreak. Before the break on Dec. 22, A.J. Ogilvy and Jermaine Bealscored 22 and 15 points, respectively, in a 68-49 victory over Furman atMemorial Gym.

It was Ogilvy’s third consecutive 20-plus point performance, andBeal’s 15-point game was his eighth double-digit game of the season. TheCommodores are 21-1 in games in which he scores in double figures in histhree year career, 8-0 this year.

Ogilvy leads a foursome averaging double figures with 16.7 points per game. Jeffery Taylor averages 12.9 points, Beal chips in 11.5 points, and Brad Tinsley contributes 10.2 points per game. Ogilvy leads all Commodores on the glass with 7.2 rebounds per game.

Vanderbilt and St. Francis will meet for the first time Wednesday. St. Francis enters the game with a 4-7 record, and have been off since Dec. 17 when they played at St Bonaventure, a game the Bonnies won, 73-66.

Devin Sweeney leads the Red Flash with 14.4 points per game, but hisstatus is questionable after he broke his hand against St. Francis (NY) onDec. 6. The 6-7 forward Mislav Jukic is next on the team in scoring with11.4 points per game. Sweeney was also the team’s leading rebounder beforegetting injured with 7.9 rebounds per contest.

Vanderbilt has an 0-1 mark all time against the Northeast Conference, withits only meeting coming against Monmouth on Nov. 24, 2001, at the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic in Honolulu. Monmouth won that meeting, 81-67.
