Marsh named SEC Player of the Week

Nov. 30, 2009

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior guard Merideth Marsh has been honored as the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after leading the Commodores to three victories in the past seven days.

Over the holiday weekend, Marsh scored 37 points and dished out 10 assists as the Commodores captured the 2009 Vanderbilt Thanksgiving Tournament championship. The Louisville native led all scorers with 25 points in Saturday’s win over North Carolina State — one shy of her career-high reached last February against Florida.

For the week, Marsh paced the Commodores in scoring, minutes played and three-point shooting. The 5-6 guard also was second on the team in assists and third in rebounding.

This is the second SEC Player of the Week honor for Marsh, who was so recognized as a sophomore on March 3, 2008. Marsh becomes the first Commodore since Chantelle Anderson (2001 & 2003) to earn two SEC Player of the Week nods. Vanderbilt’s most recent recepient of the award was Christina Wirth, who was lauded in February following wins over Florida and Georgia.

Georgia’s Jasmine Jones, a Memphis native, was named the conference’s Freshman of the Week.

Vanderbilt (6-0) is now scheduled to play three games in five days for the second consecutive week. The Commodores will travel to Dayton, Ohio, to face Wright State on Wednesday before returning home to play host to Bowling Green (Friday) and Western Kentucky (Sunday).

Twelve games — including eight SEC contests — remain on the Commodores’ home slate, with season tickets still available starting at $32. Tickets may be purchased online anytime at vucommodores.com, by phone at 615-322-GOLD (5643) or in person at the Ticket Office inside the McGugin Center on campus during regular business hours.
