Mario Moore Named SEC Player of the Week 1/10/2005
Mario Moore Named SEC Player of the Week Vanderbilt junior guard Mario Moore has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week the league announced Monday. Moore averaged 17.0 points and 5.0 assists while shooting 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from beyond the arc for the week helping lead Vanderbilt to its first 2-0 start in league play since the 1989-90 season. The Nashville native tied for game-high honors with 16 points in Vanderbilt’s 70-56 win over No. 19 Alabama and led the team with 18 points in an 88-63 win at in-state rival Tennessee. Moore helped the Commodores pull away from Alabama before halftime hitting a trio of 3-pointers within a span of 60 seconds. He dished out seven assists without a turnover against Tennessee. This marks the first Player of the Week honor for Moore. He is the first Commodore to win SEC Player of the Week since Matt Freije earned the award on Feb. 23, 2004. This also marks the 11th time a Vanderbilt player has received the honor since the 1995-96 season. Moore leads all Commodores this season averaging 14.5 points and 3.7 assists. He ranks second in the SEC shooting 50.6 percent from beyond the arc (36-of-64) and is third with 2.67 3-pointers per contest. Vanderbilt (11-4, 2-0 SEC) travels to highly ranked Kentucky (10-2, 1-0 SEC) this Wednesday. The game starts at 6 p.m. CT and will be televised by Fox Sports Net South. |
