Vanderbilt senior center Luke Kornet has been named the SEC Player of the Week for his play last week against nationally-ranked Kentucky and Florida. The 7’1 center averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game against the Wildcats and Gators.
Kornet is the Commodores’ first Player of the Week of the season and Kornet’s first of his career, and the first since Damian Jones won the honor on February 29, 2016. In all, the senior center is Vanderbilt’s 41st Player of the Week selection from the SEC.
In the win over the Gators, Kornet tied a career-high with 24 points in a win and in a hard-fought loss at Kentucky, he tallied a then-season high 23 points against the Wildcats. Kornet, who is the all-time NCAA leader for threes made by a seven-footer with 148, is also only one block shy of tying the Commodores’ all-time blocks record of 204 held by former Vanderbilt great Festus Ezeli.
On the season, Kornet is averaging 13.8 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game.
The Commodores’ next game will be in the 2017 SEC Tournament, when they face Texas A&M at 6 p.m. CT on the SEC Network at Bridgestone Arena.
