Senior Luke Kornet was named a second-team Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of American on Tuesday for his work in the classroom, becoming the fifth Vanderbilt men’s basketball player to be honored as a first or second-team Academic All-American.
Kornet, who has started all 30 games this year and is averaging 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game, has a 3.71 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in Engineering, Computer Science, and Mathematics. Kornet is also second on Vanderbilt’s all-time list in career blocks with 201.
The senior from Lantana, Texas, joins only four other Commodore players to make either the first or second team and the first player since 1996 to be honored. Jeff Fosnes (1st team, 1975, 1976), Bruce Elder (2nd team, 1992; 1st team, 1993), Steve Grant (2nd team, 1991), and Frank Seckar (2nd team, 1996) are Vanderbilt’s other first or second-team Academic All-Americans.
