Vanderbilt rolls behind seven double-figure scorers

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt men’s basketball defeated Texas Southern University 109-74 on Thursday night behind a career performance from Tyler Tanner and six other double-figure scorers. The sophomore guard notched 20 points to push the Commodores to a 5-0 record.

Vanderbilt had seven players score in double-figures, the most in a game since 2018. Returners Tanner and Tyler Nickel led the way with 20 apiece. Devin McGlockton added 14 points along with six rebounds while Duke Miles had 12 with five assists. AK Okereke and Jalen Washington each dropped 11, and Tyler Harris rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10.

The Dores traded baskets with Texas Southern for the opening minutes but pulled away after the 16-minute timeout with an extended 22-5 run. The Commodores took a 27-point lead into the half. The two traded runs the rest of the game, with Vandy stretching the lead to 40 with a 12-2 run in the final minutes.

Thursday’s victory was the fourth time this season Vanderbilt scored over 100 points, surpassing last season’s total of three. The last time the Commodores had four 100-point games in a season was 1975-76. The 28 assists tallied tonight by the Commodores were the most in a game since 2005.

Vanderbilt heads to the Battle 4 Atlantis next week for the annual Thanksgiving tournament, taking on Western Kentucky on Wednesday at 11 a.m.
