LOUDON, Tenn. – Senior Liebelei Lawrence carded a one-over par, 73, to lead the Commodores after the first round of the SEC Championship at the Tennessee National Golf Club. Vanderbilt is in sixth place after the first day of competition after shooting a 308 as a team.
Lawrence is in a tie for sixth place individually and is four strokes off the lead, which is held by Stacy Lewis of Arkansas, who birdied two out of her last three holes to get to three-under par.
Freshman Megan Grehan was next for Vanderbilt with a five-over par, 77. Grehan played the first nine holes at six over, but rallied on the back with a one-under to finish at 77. Amber Lundskog, playing in her first competitive round of the spring season, carded a first-round 76, while Jacqui Concolino finished with an 80, and Brooke Goodwin ended with an 82.
Arkansas and Florida lead the tournament after shooting a first-round 287 (+9) on Friday.
“I’m really proud of the effort today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I’m proud of Liebelei and Megan for their rounds today, and also Amber, who hasn’t played a competitive round this spring. She was swinging at it really good and is at a good place right now.
“The course played very difficult today and the greens are very tricky. We had a few mental mistakes on the greens with a few three putts, but I feel good about this team. The attitude and effort was good today and so was the body language. These girls are excited and ready to tee it up Saturday.”
The second round of the SEC Championship continues on Saturday at the Tennessee National Golf Club.
