STANFORD, Calif. – The Vanderbilt women’s golf team is in a tie for 11th place out of 18 teams after the first round of the Stanford Intercollegiate with a team total of 307 (+23). The Commodores are 25 strokes behind Duke, who ended the day in first place after firing a 282.
Liebelei Lawrence and Jacqui Concolino posted the best Vanderbilt scores Friday with a pair of four-over, 75’s, which tied them for 24th place. Megan Grehan was next for the Commodores with a 78 (+7, T53), Brooke Goodwin posted a 79 (+8, T62), and Amber Lundskog ended the day with an 83 (+12, T-80).
“We didn’t have anybody play well today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “The golf course played a little harder than it did last year, but you’ve got to keep it in the fairway, and we didn’t keep it there. We also had a bunch of three putts today.
“The good news is that we’ve got 36 holes left, and we’ve been good in the final round the last couple of times out. We just need to come out tomorrow and play. Everyone’s attitude is good, but everything went bad at the same time today. I told the team that we got our bad round of the way, and now we have to go play solid the rest of the weekend.”
Duke leads the tournament with a two-under, 282, and was the only team to post an under-par score on Friday. UCLA is in second place with a 291 (+7), and Arizona State is 11 strokes back in third place with a 293 (+9).
Individually, the Blue Devils’ Amanda Blumenherst leads the field after shooting a five-under, 66, on Friday. Stanford’s Mari Chun is in second place with a 68.
Round two of the Stanford Intercollegiate takes place on Saturday at the Stanford University Golf Course.
