COLUMBIA, Mo. – Tyler Tanner’s last second heave rolled around the rim and out as No. 19 Vanderbilt erased a 21-point deficit in the final minutes but fell 81-80 at Missouri on Wednesday night.
Tanner, who played through illness Wednesday, finished with a game-high 27 points. He added five assists and three steals. Devin McGlockton added 13 points and seven rebounds while Tyler Nickel scored 11 with five boards and three assists.
Mizzou (18-8, 8-5 SEC) had five players in double figures, led by 19 from Jayden Stone. The Tigers shot 50 percent from the three-point line and hit 25-of-32 free throws in the win. Trent Pierce and T.O. Barrett each scored 16 while Anthony Robinson II scored 13 and Mark Mitchell 10.
Vanderbilt (21-5, 8-5 SEC) opened the game 4-of-6 from the field to build an early 9-3 edge. From there, the Dores hit just 13 of their next 43 shots as the Tigers built a 21-point edge with 8 minutes to play. That’s when the comeback started as Vandy hit 11 of its final 14 shots to pull within one with a second to play. Tanner intercepted the inbounds pass at half court and launched a final shot which rolled around and out as the Commodores suffered a second one-point defeat this season.
Vanderbilt outrebounded the Tigers 37-34 and racked up 10 steals. Mizzou, however, made the most of the charity stripe with an 11-point advantage on 14 more attempts.
The Commodores return home Saturday to face Tennessee at Memorial Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN.
