Lakey Recognized with Five Awards; Freije Named Most Valuable Player Senior guard Russell Lakey earned five awards and senior forward Matt Freije earned three, including Most Valuable Player, at the 2003-04 Vanderbilt Men’s Basketball Banquet held at the Marriott at Vanderbilt on April 18. Lakey received the Leadership Award, the Defensive Player of the Year Award, and the Assist Award (3.9 assists per game) while sharing the Coaches’ Award with fellow senior center Martin Schnedlitz and sharing the Captains’ Award with Freije, Schnedlitz and fellow senior guard Scott Hundley. Freije earned the Most Valuable Player Award for the second consecutive year. The senior forward also won the Rebounder Award (5.4 rebounds per game). Junior guard Jason Holwerda, who majors in Human and Organizational Development, was recognized with the Scholar-Athlete Award. Hundley and junior center Dawid Przybyszewski received the Most Improved Player Award. Vanderbilt radio play-by-play announcer Joe Fisher was honored with the Ken Hudgens Award for his dedication and service to the men’s basketball program. The banquet paid tribute to the 2003-04 Commodores who advanced to the NCAA Tournament Phoenix Regional Semifinal and compiled a 23-10 overall record while setting the school record for best start to begin a season (12-0) and most home wins in a season (15). The 23 wins tied for the third most in school history. |
