Kane First, Commodores Sixth in Arkansas

JONESBORO, AR – Tara Kane became the first Vanderbilt bowler to win an individual tournament championship Sunday as she captured individual honors at the Lady Indian Invitational, hosted by Arkansas State University.

The Commodore team slipped to a sixth place finish after entering the deciding Baker games in second position.  Central Missouri State won the team title.

Kane, a Greenburg, Pa., freshman had been second heading into Sunday’s play on the basis of a 222 average that included a 267 score against Minnesota State. She ended team competition Sunday in first place by averaging 215 over seven games.

Joining Kane on the all-tournament team was another VU freshman, Kaitlin Reynolds of Loves Park, Ill.  Reynolds notched a 244 game Saturday and was third individually with a 210 average.  Central’s Tina Peak was second. A third Commodore freshman, Michelle Peloquin, missed the all-tournament team by a mere four pins after averaging 208.

Vanderbilt emerged from the team competition which determined seeding as the No. 2 seed with a 5-2 record.  However, the Commodores were upset in the first round of Baker play by Minnesota State, the seventh seed.  They bounced back with a victory over Louisiana State but lost a third game to Bethune Cookman.

“We showed what we are capable of doing in the team games,” said Coach John Williamson, “but  the Baker games are unique and it is difficult to simulate the atmosphere and energy level in practice. The teams that would seemingly not win these Baker games  – for instance, we were 100 pins better than North Carolina A & T in team games — can be dangerous.  Anything can happen in a Baker game.  We need to work on this aspect of play,  which is new to all of our freshmen.”

(Editor’s Note:  In collegiate bowling, team games consist of five players each bowling a standard 10 frames and adding up the total pins for a team score.  Baker games consist of a five-person team taking turns bowling a frame; thereby each bowler accounts for two frames.)

Vanderbilt went 6-4 overall in the tournament after going 5-2 and averaging 981 in team play.  The Commodores record for the year is now 6-6.  Its next competition will be the Maverick Challenge at Minnesota State/Mankato November 11-13.
