Women’s Results | Men’s Results
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Sophomore Hannah Jumper won the women’s 4k race as the Vandy women took first place overall in the Belmont Opener at Percy Warner Park on Friday evening to kick off the 2012 cross country season.
Jumper finished with a time 14:09.10, which was two seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Vanderbilt won the meet with 33 points, while Kentucky took second with 34.
Vanderbilt competed against fellow SEC schools in Kentucky and Tennessee, while also running against Western Kentucky, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee State and the host school Belmont.
The Commodores placed four runners inside the top-10 as Head Coach Steve Keith ran only his freshmen and sophomores in the event. Sophomore Rebecca Chandler placed fourth with a time of 14:31.30. Freshmen Sara Barron (sixth) and Vanessa Valentine (ninth) rounded out the top 10 for Vandy with times of 14:43.00 and 14:52.00, respectively.
The Vandy women were picked to repeat as SEC champs and the Commodores got the season started off on the right track.
Coach Keith and the Commodores will return to Percy Warner Park on Saturday, Sept. 15, when Vanderbilt hosts the Commodore Classic.
Malmed Leads the Men
Senior Billy Malmed finished 28th in a time of 16:17.70 to lead all Vandy men runners at the Belmont Opener.
Vanderbilt finished eighth as a team with 171 points in the 5k race, while Tennessee took home first place with 50 points.
Sophomores John Ewing and Andrew Bachman were the next two Vandy finishers as they crossed the finish line in 16:22.00 and 16:25.60, respectively.
The men will also be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 15, for the Commodore Classic.
