LAS VEGAS – Vanderbilt assistant bowling coach Josie Earnest is tied for seventh place in singles play as the Pan American Bowling Congress got underway here today. Earnest, making her official Team USA debut, averaged 218.83 over six games and trailed Alicia Marcano of Venezuela, who won with a 226.00 average.
Josie was the third highest Team USA representative behind Shannon Pluhowsky (225.50) and Liz Johnson (220.50). She finished ahead of Diandra Asbaty (209.50), Stephanie Nation (210.67) and Leanne Hulsenburg (192.33). There are 90 women from a multitude of countries competing.
“My day ended better than it began so that was good news,” Earnest said. “We got started late because there was an issue with the approach and because of that I was timid the first few games not knowing if I might slide or stick. Once I got out of my own way things improved.”
The international tournament will run through Saturday with a different event being conducted each day. Tuesday, for example, will be doubles play in which Earnest will team with Stephanie Nation. The top three finishers in each category receive gold, silver and bronze medals and each individual’s pin fall is kept for all-around and master’s competition.
