Having reeled off 12 wins in their past 14 games, the Vanderbilt women are looking to extend their momentum through the rest of January. Here’s a closer look at what’s happening and what’s ahead for the Commodores:
JAM THE GYM: TICKETS, HOT DOGS — $1!
The Commodores will host their annual “Jam the Gym” promotion on Jan. 25 when Vanderbilt hosts Alabama at 6 p.m. Fans can purchase $1 tickets by visiting the ticket office in the McGugin Center or at the ticket windows on the day of the game. (Purchasing online or over the phone would add an additional fee).
l Hot dogs will be on sale for $1 at the game.
l The game will feature a special halftime performance by The Beale Street Flippers. For more, click HERE.
The game against Alabama has also been designated as Vanderbilt’s “We Back Pat” game. The “We Back Pat” campaign — named in honor of former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt — is a week-long initiative focused on building support for The Pat Summitt Foundation and the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
PLAY FOR KAY/PINK OUT
Vanderbilt’s game against Kentucky on Feb. 14 has been marked as this season’s “Play for Kay/Pink-out” game at Memorial Gym. Fans are encouraged to wear pink, and the Vanderbilt players will also be wearing special uniforms as the WBB program shows its support for the fight against breast cancer. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association and The V Foundation, is a charitable organization committed to being a part of finding an answer in the fight against women’s cancers through raising money for scientific research and related projects, assisting the underserved and unifying people for a common cause. It is named in honor of Kay Yow, the former North Carolina State University head coach, who passed away on Jan. 24, 2009, after facing her third bout with the disease. To date, the Fund has contributed $5.18 million in support of women’s cancer research.
GIVE AWAYS
At all home games, Vanderbilt fans can look forward to several in-game promotions, including the T-shirt toss (thrown by cheerleaders during timeouts) and gold-shaker giveaways. There are also free posters and wallet-sized schedules available at the marketing tables and miniature basketballs will be throw into the stands during selected timeouts.
MOST RECENT GAME: VU DOWNS LSU
Buoyed by another gritty defensive effort, Vanderbilt won its second straight SEC game Thursday night, downing LSU 58-42 at Memorial Gym. The Commodores (13-4, 2-2) came into the night ranked eighth in the nation in defense, surrendering just 51.6 points per game. They did even better than that against the short-handed Tigers (7-9, 1-3), who dressed only eight players. Vanderbilt, which never trailed in the game, limited LSU to 33.3 percent shooting and held the Tigers to single-digit scoring in the second and third quarters. Christa Reed, the SEC’s leader in 3-point percentage, went 3-of-4 from long range and finished with a game-high 15 points, and Spears added 10 points and four rebounds for Vanderbilt. Akilah Bethel finished with 11 points to lead LSU, and Alexis Hyder and Jasmine Rhodes added 10 each. The Commodores, who have gone 12-2 in their past 14 games, are now just two wins away from matching their win total from last year, when they finished 15-16 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the first since 1999.
