Honing In On The Hornets

  • Alabama State hasn’t won any of its road games, losing all seven.
  • The Hornets have faced fellow SEC opponents Mississippi State, Auburn and Georgia.
  • Alabama State was picked to finish second in the SWAC preseason poll with several [Ayana Emmanuel, Shmya Ward, and Jayla Crawford] were selected to the All-SWAC preseason teams.

A Rundown Of The Aggies

  • Texas A&M is currently back in the win column after defeating UTSA, 77-51 on Dec. 20th.
  • The Aggies went undefeated in their bracket of the 2021 Paradise Jam, defeating Pitt, South Dakota, and Northwestern.
  • Head coach Gary Blair was announced on Dec. 21 as a nominee for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Blair holds the 12th-most wins in Division history, having won 848 games throughout his 37 years as a collegiate head coach. The Dallas native has registered 35 winning seasons, 30 20-win seasons and 16-consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament. He is one of three coaches to have taken two-or-more schools to the final four (Arkansas, Texas A&M).

Defending Home Court

  • The Commodores are on a five day winning streak at home. Having kept Memorial loss free for 46 days, with the one and only home loss coming from Little Rock on Nov. 12 [40-56]. 

Double [Double] Trouble 

  • Jordyn Cambridge notched her third career double-double against UAlbany with 10 points and 10 steals, her second double-double of the season. With 10 steals in a single game, Cambridge now holds the No. 2 spot in program history for most steals in a game.
  • Sacha Washington tallied back-to-back double-doubles against DePaul [14 points and 10 rebounds] and Chattanooga [11 points and 10 rebounds].

Got Five On It 

  • For the fifth Vandy win, the Commodores defeated the Mocs 91-61 [largest margin of victory this season] on Nov. 30

Numbers Don’t Lie 

  • In Division I women’s basketball the Commodores are ranked 88th in assists, 97th in free throw attempts, 90th in free throws made, 79th in rebound margin, 70th in rebounds, 64th in scoring defense, 10th in steals, 27th in steals per game and 34th in turnovers forced.
  • Individually, Cambridge is ranked 46th in assists, 96th in assists per game, 33rd in minutes played, 138th in free throw attempts, first steals and third in steals per game.
  • Brinae Alexander ranks 68th in field goal attempts, 80th in field goals made, 185th in field-goal percentage, 94th in final points, 67th in minutes played and 248th in points per game.
  • Iyana Moore is ranked 120th in three-point field goals attempted and 126th in three-point field goals made.

Fresh Faces 

  • Moore scored her 100th point against UAlbany to join elite company as one of the fastest freshmen to reach this milestone, taking her only 11 games.
  • The freshmen quartet in Moore, De’Mauri Flournoy, Kendal Cheesman and Washington have combined for 280 points this season, 33.6 percent of the total points scored for Vanderbilt.
  • All active members for Vandy scored against Chattanooga and the Vanderbilt bench produced a season-high 49 points, the first time of the season.

A Vandy Win Would

  • Put Vanderbilt at 2-0 over Alabama State, since the first meeting back in 1991-92 in Memorial Gymnasium.
  • Be the first time that the Commodores have closed the nonconference season and opened SEC play with wins since the 2019-20 season [against Columbia and Auburn]
  • Give Vandy its fifth win in the all-time series against Texas A&M, second in College Station.
  • Extend Vandy’s win streak to five games, the longest of the season.

A Vandy Loss Would

  • Break Vanderbilt’s win streak.
  • Give the Hornets their first win in the series.
  • Put Texas A&M at 9-4 over Vandy in the all-time series.
  • Push the Commodores to 0-2 on the week with back-to-back losses.

  • Vanderbilt will host Missouri on Sunday, Jan. 2 at 2 p.m. and Arkansas on Thursday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
