Ground to Make Up in Cabo

Commodores ninth entering Battle at the Beach final round

SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico  The Vanderbilt women’s golf team has plenty of ground to make up Sunday in the final round of the Battle at the Beach.

After struggling to a 12-over-par 300 on Saturday, the Commodores enter the final day of competition 18 strokes off the first-place pace of Ole Miss. Vanderbilt sits in ninth place through 36 holes with a 598 total score.

Junior Louise Yu continued to lead the Commodore contingent Saturday, shooting a second consecutive even-par 72. She is tied for eighth in the medalist competition, five strokes behind Chiara Tamburlini of Ole Miss.

Head coach Greg Allen was disappointed with the Commodores’ second-round result.

“We are playing very un-Vandy like, really not sharp with much of anything. I have liked the way Lou (Yu) is battling,” Allen said. “I just want to see us play the way I know we can play on Sunday.”

Yu made four birdies during her even-par performance. Through 36 holes, the product of Duluth, Georgia, has registered a team-high 10 birdies.

Sophomore Auston Kim and senior Abbey Carlson were the next lowest Commodores. A sophomore from St. Augustine, Florida, Kim went her final nine holes without a birdie in a second straight 2-over-par 74. Carlson opened with a birdie but couldn’t keep the momentum en route to a 3-over-par 75. Kim and Carlson are tied for 22nd and 34th, respectively, in the individual competition.

Junior Virginia Green is tied for 67th individually. She is 12-over-par with a two-day total of 156.

Junior Morgan Baxendale is tied for 75th with a 36-hole total of 17-over-par 161.

Final round action will begin Sunday at 9:30 a.m. CT with a shotgun start.
