Goodwin Signs Vanderbilt Golf National Letter

11/15/2005

Vanderbilt women’s golf coach Martha Richards Freitag has signed another blue-chip high school prospect to a national letter of intent.

Brooke Goodwin of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., has chosen the Commodore program, joining a youthful Vanderbilt team that moved into the nation’s Top 10 rankings with a strong autumn performance.

Goodwin has a wealth of prep and amateur golf experience.  She was third at the 2005 AJGA Stars of Texas Junior and was tied for 10th at the AJGA Golf Pride Classic.  She finished in a tie for seventh at the 2005 North Carolina state high school championship, where her best career finish was third.  She is a finalist for the North Carolina Wendy’s Heisman Award.

“I am so excited about the addition of Brooke Goodwin to our roster next year,” Freitag says.  “She is a perfect fit for us.  She is driven and motivated and fits Vanderbilt academically.  Additionally, everyone knows how I like to coach excellent athletes and Brooke has a very good basketball background and is a very good athlete.  She will also be the first left-handed player I’ve ever coached.”

Goodwin is an outstanding student, currently ranking second in a class of 354, and plans to major in medical and biological sciences. She is a member of the 2005 HP Scholastic Junior All-America Team, which honored 10 high school girls from across the United States.

She played one year of basketball and was even a member of the school’s boy’s team for one season until the girl’s team was established.  She is the top rated prospect in North Carolina’s Class of 2006.

“I visited Vanderbilt last winter after I had been on a number of other visits,” Goodwin says, “and I absolutely fell in love with everything.  It exceeded all my expectations and it was clear this was the school for me.”

Brooke was 14th at the Wildcat Golf/Wichita Junior Championship and played in the Rolex Girls Junior Championship (T35) and the McDonald’s Betsy Rawls Girls Championship (31) in addition to the U.S. Girls Junior Championship.

Goodwin has known Commodore All-American Chris Brady since she was 10 years old.

“We played in a lot of junior tournaments,” Goodwin recalls, “and we managed to stay in contact through the years.  Whenever Chris would talk to me she was always so positive about Vanderbilt and she just loves the coach.  I think she talked to Coach Freitag about me and she talked to me about the school. She played a big role in getting us together.”

Goodwin will join a Vanderbilt roster that currently includes top freshmen Amber Lundskog of San Diego and Jacqui Concolino of Orlando, last year’s signing class that made an early impact during the fall schedule.

Brooke is the daughter of Robert and Beverly Goodwin.
