PALO ALTO, Calif. — The Vanderbilt women’s golf team shot up six positions on the team leaderboard and is in sixth place after the second day of competition at the Stanford Intercollegiate in Palo Alto, Calif. The Commodores posted a second-round 285, the lowest total of the day, and junior Brooke Goodwin carded a second-round 68 to lead Vanderbilt. The Commodores now have a two day total of 574 (289-285).
“We teed off on the back nine, and we were hitting the ball great,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “Brooke shot a 30 on the front nine and really got us off to a good start. We’re having a lot of fun out there, and everyone is really supporting each other.
“It’s a real confidence booster when you make up six spots on the leaderboard after one round, and this team is getting more confident every time we’re out on the course.”
The Commodores’ 285 on Saturday consisted of Goodwin’s 68, Andrea Messer’s even-par 71, and Marina Alex and Megan Grehan’s 73’s. Jacqui Concolino shot a second-round 76 for Vanderbilt on day two. Alex leads the Vanderbilt charge after two rounds with a 144 (71-73), which puts her in tie for 26th, with Messer (74-71) and Grehan (72-73) next with a 145, which ties them for 30th place. Goodwin is in a tie for 41st with a 146 (78-68), and Concolino is in a tie for 59th with a two-round total of 149 (72-79).
UCLA leads the tournament after two days with a score of 563 (277-286), two strokes better than USC, who is in second place with a total of 565 (279-286).
Oklahoma State’s Caroline Masson is at seven-under par 135 (65-70) to lead all individuals.
The third and final round continues Sunday from the Stanford Golf Course.
