INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Vanderbilt’s Natalie Goodman climbed into second place Tuesday at the USBC Junior Gold Tournament.
The O’Fallon, Illinois southpaw is just one of two bowlers in the massive field of 569 to finish the two day, 10-game stretch averaging over 200. She is plus-12 (2,012 pins) and trails Kara Mangiola of Rochester, N.Y. by just 32 pins heading into Wednesday’s action.
Two incoming Commodore freshmen, Amanda Fry and Tori Ferris, are in the Top 35. Fry, a lefty from California, is in 32nd place (-134) and Ferris, from Michigan, is 35th (-139).
Vanderbilt sophomore Nicole Mosesso had a strong Tuesday and jumped up nearly 100 places to sit in 52nd (-159). Robyn Renslow, a transfer from the west coast, also rallied and is in 63rd place (-168). Olivia Wirtz is in 127th place and Liz Saffold is in 226th place.
Scores at the tournament have been lower than past years as evidenced by only two bowlers averaging more than 200. Defending champion Natalie Jiminez, a collegiate star at Central Missouri, is in 158th place (-252) to put some perspective on the first two days.
The Junior Gold is the nation’s most coveted youth championship. Former Commodore Brittni Hamilton won the title in 2010 and current assistant coach Josie Earnest finished second in 2008.
