NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt’s Lena Gooden and Jackson Scruggs were named to the SEC Track and Field/Cross Country Community Service Team, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey announced Wednesday.
The conference names a Community Service Team for each of its 22 league-sponsored sports, looking to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to his community through superior service efforts.
Lena Gooden has dedicated over 30 hours of community service since summer 2024, primarily volunteering with the Martha O’Bryan Food Pantry. Gooden also served breakfast at the Nashville Rescue Mission and participated in MLK Day of Service in Atlanta this year.
During the school year, Jackson Scruggs volunteers weekly with the Jones Paideia Elementary before/after school program. In addition to helping students with their homework, Scruggs serves as a mentor for students participating in the “Men’s Club,” which teaches life skills. Additionally, Scruggs is involved with Dancing Dores, which is athletics’ fundraising campaign for Vanderbilt Dance Marathon.
