“This was a gutsy win in a lot of ways. I had no idea coming into the game how much Vanderbilt had dominated this series. I knew they led it, but I didn’t realize how much they had really controlled this series — especially at home. Not many people come in here and win. There’s a great presence and they have tremendous fans, and then the building itself is so unique. I still can’t get over this set-up. I’m very proud of our players for playing with poise today.”

On defending Vanderbilt’s back-door cuts

“There are certain things that they’re accustomed to getting a certain number of every game — whether it’s back-door cuts, or unique plays or when they have a little pressure on the out-of-bounds along the sideline. But I told the guys that we were averaging more points per game then them coming in and that if we could take some of those away I thought we’d have a chance.’

On Steve Newman

“His shooting has really improved steadily over the last few months. He’s also been more aggressive. I like that. But that three-point shot is certainly a weapon.”

On his team’s play in the second half

“Rebounding is always critical. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I thought we did a better job of it today. In the second half, we’ve never been able to rebound and defend as well in this building. That’s partially because our bench is at the other end and so the guys can’t hear us and we can’t point out as much to them. They had to do it on their own today.”

On his team’s improvement

“This is another one of those games where even if we had lost, I would have still felt good about how we played because I thought we improved over the ‘Bama game and that we were moving in the right direction.”

On Sundiata Gaines

“This is the first time since I’ve been at Georgia that we have had our point guard available for this game. I reminded him that he would be able to score if he just kept being aggressive and sharing the ball. We need our point guard to do that. The guys all said how much they appreciated all those dimes he was dropping out there.”
