Galvan Earns First SEC Weekly Honor

The point guard tied the Vanderbilt freshman record for most assists and steals in a game to earn SEC Co-Freshman of the Week honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Vanderbilt women’s basketball player Aubrey Galvan was named the SEC Co-Freshman of the Week after she tied a pair of school freshman single-game records.

Galvan matched the Vanderbilt freshman single-game record for assists, as well as the freshman single-game record for most steals against Tennessee State. The point guard recorded 15 assists and nine steals against the Lady Tigers in last Sunday’s 99-43 victory.

Her 15 helpers vs. TSU matched Ashley Smith’s Vanderbilt freshman record for most assists in a game, which she set on Nov. 29, 1998, against Hampton. Her nine steals equaled Deborah Denton’s freshman single-game record set against New Mexico State on Jan. 4, 1987.

The Deerfield, Illinois, native averaged 10.3 assists, 7.7 points, 3.7 steals and 3.3 rebounds to help No. 17-ranked Vanderbilt go 3-0 this past week. The guard dished out eight or more assists in all three contests, as she shares SEC Freshman of the Week honors with Alabama’s Ace Austin.

Galvan’s career-high of 15 assists in Sunday’s 99-43 victory over Tennessee State is the most by an NCAA Division I freshman against a D-I opponent this season, while it is tied for the second-most by an NCAA player nationally.

Combining points and assists, Galvan contributed an average of 33.7 points per game this past week, as she dished out 31 total assists and scored 23 points over three games. The guard held an assist-to-turnover ratio of 4.4 assists per game over the week.

The guard also posted her first collegiate double-double in the win over TSU, as Galvan registered 16 points to go along with her 15 assists. The guard nearly missed out on the program’s second triple-double, as she also had nine steals against the Commodores.

No. 17-ranked Vanderbilt heads to the United States Virgin Islands this week to play in the 2025 Paradise Jam. The Commodores will be in the Island Bracket in St. Thomas and take on Oregon State on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT. Game 2 of the Paradise Jam will be held on Saturday, when Vandy will challenge either BYU or Virginia Tech at 11 a.m. CT. Both games will stream live on ESPN+.
