Gabasa leads WG at Cougar

Sophomore Irina Gabasa tied a career-low with a 69 in the first round of the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C. to lead the Commodores to a tie for seventh place after play completed Sunday at the Yeomens Hall Club. As a team, Vanderbilt shot a 289 and is only four shots back of first-place Southern Cal, who fired an opening-round 285.

The Commodores are tied with Wisconsin and 2012 national champions Alabama for seventh place.

Gabasa had five birdies and two bogeys in her first round at Yeomens Hall to post her 69, which matched her career best that she established last season in the second round of the Stanford Intercollegiate and tied her for third place. Gabasa played in 21 rounds in 2011-12 and had a stroke average of 77.2.

Vanderbilt also counted scores of 70 from senior Lauren Stratton, who is in a tie for seventh, a 73 from sophomore Kendall Martindale (T-33), and a 77 from junior Rene Sobolewski (T-88). Freshman Jenny Hahn fired a first-round 79 (T-115).

Southern Cal holds a one-stroke lead over Duke, Virginia, and Florida in the team standings, and Marta Sanz of Auburn and Isabelle Lendle each fired a first-round 67 and has the individual lead.
