Senior women’s golfer Irina Gabasa and junior men’s golfer Carson Jacobs were honored by the SEC for their work off of the course in being named to the 2015 SEC Community Service Team in an announcement made by the SEC Office on Monday.
Gabasa, from Mandaue City, Philippines, has been involved in many community service projects in her Vanderbilt career both in Nashville and abroad. She is very involved in community outreach in her native Philippines, speaking to students at her old high school about her experience in America and with golf, while also helping children in need by organizing a food distribution to impoverished children. In Nashville, she is a volunteer with the First Tee of Nashville helping children learn the game of golf and has also volunteered her time at the Vanderbilt Veterans Hospital. Gabasa made the Dean’s List in 2013 and 2014, and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2013 and 2014.
Jacobs, from Hendersonville, Tenn., is the Vanderbilt men’s golf Student Athletic Advisory Committee representative, where he helps organize the annual student-athlete Christmas Party, a Halloween Trick or Treat, and a spring Field Day for elementary students near the Vanderbilt campus. He was also named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2014.
