NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor for Athletics and University Affairs and Athletic Director Candice Storey Lee and the Office of General Counsel (OGC) announced that Amanda Green has joined the university as associate general counsel. Green will primarily provide legal assistance to support the strategic and operational needs of Vanderbilt Athletics, utilizing nearly two decades of legal and strategic experience with some of the most successful and cohesive organizations in professional sports.

“Amanda Green embodies our laser-focused commitment to meeting the moment and leading the way forward for college athletics,” Lee said. “She’s helped shape championship environments from the bench to the boardroom and understands how successful organizations embrace opportunity by working together to maximize potential.”

Green will support Vanderbilt’s goals with respect to the evolving landscape of college athletics. Her portfolio will range from negotiating agreements to advising on partnerships, to name, image and likeness (NIL) activities and other evolving legislation and legal matters among other responsibilities. As part of Vanderbilt’s OGC, she will report to Ruby Z. Shellaway, vice chancellor, general counsel and university secretary, and work closely with Lee and  her team.

“I look forward to working with Vice Chancellor Lee and the Vanderbilt Athletics team and Vice Chancellor Shellaway and my OGC colleagues,” Green said. “I’ve seen how sports can rally communities and inspire individuals, and I welcome the opportunity to help Vanderbilt navigate key legal questions facing collegiate athletics today.”

Green spent over 10 years with the Oklahoma City Thunder, including more than four as vice president of team counsel and strategic alignment. As chief legal officer for the Thunder’s basketball operations department, she was instrumental in helping one of the NBA’s most consistently innovative and successful front offices comply with and thrive under the league’s collective bargaining agreement.

Prior to the Thunder, Green worked for the NBA as an intellectual property associate, advising internal business groups on intellectual property issues. She also worked as an associate in general corporate practice with Proskauer Rose LLP, with a focus on finance and mergers and acquisitions transactions for clients in the sports, banking, retail and manufacturing industries.

Green found a calling in sports even before she entered the legal profession. As a basketball operations intern with the San Antonio Spurs, she provided analytical and logistical support to the front office, including future Thunder general manager Sam Presti, during the 2006-07 championship season.

As a Duke undergraduate, she served four years as a manager, including as head manager, for the men’s basketball team. Her time included Duke’s 2004 Final Four appearance.

Green earned her law degree from Georgetown in 2010. She earned her bachelor’s degree in economics from Duke in 2006.
