Freitag, May Wood Earn Top SEC Golf Honors 4-23-04

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Vanderbilt head coach Martha Freitag, Alabama’s Darby Sligh, Vanderbilt’s May Wood and Auburn’s Nicole Hage headline the 2004 Southeastern Conference Women’s Golf Awards announced today.

Freitag was voted SEC Coach of the Year by her peers while Sligh was named the first annual SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Wood and Hage tied for Golfer of the Year honors and Hage was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Year.

Leading Vanderbilt to a No. 6 National Ranking and the SEC Women’s Golf Championship, Martha Freitag received SEC Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year.  In her fourth season at the helm of the Commodore squad, Freitag has led her team to a 125-23 mark heading into NCAA play. 

Three other Vanderbilt golfers were  honored.  Sarah Jacobs joined May Wood on the SEC’s first-team while freshman Chris Brady and senior Courtney Wood were second team all-SEC selections.

Darby Sligh earned the inaugural SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, carrying a 74.71 stroke average while sporting a 3.59 grade-point average in Marketing. She is currently a member of Alabama’s Student Athletic Advisory Board and was an NGCA Academic All-American in 2002-03.

May Wood and Nicole Hage shared SEC Golfer of the Year honors. 

Wood earned SEC Co-Golfer of the Year honors after amassing a 73.16 adjusted stroke average, good for first in the conference and 10th nationally.  The Signal Mountain, Tenn., native earned medalist honors at the SEC Women’s Golf Championship and finished in the top 10 of five tournaments.  She was  also a first-team All-SEC selection.

Hage earned SEC Co-Golfer of the Year honors after amassing a 73.37 adjusted stroke average, good for second in the conference and 16th nationally.  She also was a unanimous selection as the SEC Freshman of the Year.  The Coral Springs, Fla., native finished in the top 20 in nine of the 10 tournaments she competed in.  She was also a first-team All-SEC selection.

Florida’s Aimee Cho and Tennessee’s Violeta Retamoza earned their second consecutive first-team All-SEC honors.  Auburn’s Nicole Hage and Maria Martinez, Georgia’s Whitney Wade, South Carolina’s Adrienne Gautreaux and Vanderbilt’s Sarah Jacobs and May Wood round out the rest of the first-team selections.
