Freitag Agrees to Contract Extension 8-3-04 8/3/2004 Martha Richards Freitag, the SEC Women’s Golf Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004, has agreed to a long-term contract extension to remain at Vanderbilt. Freitag has taken the Commodores to national prominence in her four years with the program. Last spring Vanderbilt won its first women’s golf SEC Championship. The Commodores won four other championships, including a title at the NCAA Central Regional before finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships. She was named the national coach of the year for 2004 by Golfweek. “I have many positive reasons for wanting to stay at Vanderbilt,” Freitag says. “We have begun a tradition of excellence that I truly value. Vanderbilt is one of the few opportunities in the entire nation in which a student-athlete can strive for the best in academics and athletics. This department has proven that academic and athletic success can go together. “I also appreciate the opportunity to work with some of the nation’s finest head coaches that are on this staff,” Freitag continues. “These coaches make me better. I especially was pleased when Press McPhaul (men’s coach) decided to stay. We work together well and he is doing an outstanding job with the men’s program.” Freitag also cited the excellent support from the Nashville golf community as a primary reason in staying at Vanderbilt. “I believe that student-athletes can have a fantastic experience at Vanderbilt, competing in the Southeastern Conference and earning a superior diploma,” Freitag continues. “Very few places can match the combination of our university, our city and our conference. It is a special place and I am glad to be a part of it.” “Martha Freitag is the finest women’s golf coach in America,” Vanderbilt Vice Chancellor David Williams commented. “Her commitment to Vanderbilt, and Vanderbilt’s commitment to her, means that we will be competing for championships every year.” |
