NASHVILLE, Tenn.  It’s going to be a hot homecoming for several Vanderbilt sports legends at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville on Saturday, July 1. That’s when the “Vandy Heroes” will take on the “Real Heroes of Nashville” in a match-up to raise awareness and support the domestic violence services of YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee.
The “Vandy Heroes” are led by NFL wide receiver and Vanderbilt graduate Jordan Matthews. The “Heroes” team includes former university football teammates and several NFL greats. Matthews established Matthews Mission to give back, and the charity game is the inaugural event in Nashville.
“I’m excited to bring my old friends and teammates back to Nashville to support the YWCA and MEND,” said Matthews. “Their work empowering women and families is perfectly aligned with the vision of my charitable organization, Matthews Mission. I can’t thank the Nashville, Middle Tennessee and Vanderbilt communities enough; they are so generous and always provide support when it’s time to give back. I’m looking forward to making a positive impact while having fun in my adopted hometown over the July 4th weekend.”
The “Real Heroes” are men and women making a difference in the community, including teachers, soldiers, police officers and firefighters. Local educators and coaches Ronnie McMahan and Drew Maddux are two of the “Real Heroes.” They’re led by Shan Foster, the YWCA’s Senior Director of External Affairs and MEND. Foster also happens to be Vanderbilt basketball’s all-time leading scorer and a former NBA player.
“This game is a great way to introduce new audiences to the YWCA’s work and violence prevention initiative,” Foster said. “We are confident that our efforts to make Nashville the safest city in the nation for women and girls will be successful.”
Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Doors open at 10 a.m., and the game tips off at noon. Visit jordanmatthewsmission.org for more information and to purchase tickets.
