6/6/2006 Former Vanderbilt basketball player Barry Booker is traveling to Iraq later this summer as part of a leadership group from Servant Group International to help conduct a vacation bible school and lead a week-long basketball camp. Booker’s group will minister about the teachings of Christianity, racial reconciliation and basketball. “I’ve been surprised to sense God call me to this,” Booker said. “I have a great passion for the goals of this trip. It really fits me and I’m excited to be going.” Servant Group International (SGI) is a Nashville-based Christian organization that works to promote the institutions of education and family in a traditional Middle Eastern society. SGI also assists refugees from Middle-Eastern countries living in Nashville. Those interested in making financial contributions for Booker’s trip should contact SGI at 615-832-2282. Booker lettered at Vanderbilt from 1986-89, helping the Commodores advance to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1988 and 1989. He holds the Southeastern Conference record for career 3-point shooting percentage (.460) and is listed fourth at Vanderbilt in 3-pointers made (246). Booker has worked since 1994 as a college basketball television color analyst for Jefferson-Pilot Sports (now Lincoln Financial Sports). He also has worked at Wells Fargo since August 2005. |
